Some topics covered:

  •  500 million smartphones that’s still improving. “90%+ of those consumers are upgrading to entry-level Android smartphones…” Developers must remember that these devices capabilities trail behind US and UE counterparts; developers must remember to optimize for this relatively low-end Android market.
  • Hundreds of app stores, but about 20 major players. Focus on only on China’s very largest app stores with the greatest distribution efforts. Arai recommends international concerns work with a third-party company with a local presence in China who understands these idiosyncrasies.
  • Many app stores means many approval and billing processes. Each store will require different QA and certification processes for each, along with vastly different revenue splits — QQ for instance takes up to 70% of an app’s revenue, while China Unicom takes 30%.

    App creators must track not only the performance of their app, but also the current standing of the app stores. This market moves extremely fast and one can find themselves trailing rather quickly.

  • There’s App Store life beyond games.  China is seeing a number of other app varieties beginning to gain , like educational apps and basic utilities, especially those which enable sharing of audio, video, and images, attracting substantial downloads.
  • Major players dominate China’s app market. These major players only cater to the proven audience and established app categories. The Chinese app world is open to many categories  and audience considered niches or have not been explored, like exercise and educational. Arai strongly recommend that your app come with deep social network integration with China’s top social networks to increase the chances it will find the audience it deserves.
  • Pain points besides piracy: First, the Chinese government will tax whopping 30%. Then publishing an app requires cloud services backend support; which means using an operation within China. Cloud and servers beyond the Great Firewall will suffer connectivity issues.

Statement of the Problem

When I conceived this idea, I had just brushed the surface of color knowledge.  I soon found out that few spectrophotometers or colorimeters capture the colorimerty data from the emitted light on a display device.  Display characterization devices, such as the X-Rite i1 measures the light to calibrate, but provide no numerical color data. Such devices do not output the spectral data. After many inquiries to X-Rite and waiting for the engineers to return my call, I finally got an answer about SpectraShop 4, software program that would not only measure, but provide a report of measured colormertic data. SpectraShop 4 is a great piece of software. I think that it has great potential for future use of color measurement needs.

This study has practical application for mobile device manufacturers. Creators of content for mobile devices would be the other group of people who would benefit from this research as users of the content. The industry needs to educate the consumers who might make important color decisions using a mobile device that does not accurately reproduction the original image’s color correctly.

The problem is a current issue that needs to be solved. The population affected is overall is huge and includes all countries that have mobile devices. People who own smart phone are usually innovators and influence others. This is important to understand because the mobile device market is only going to increase. Industries that will be effected include graphic design, publishing, medical testing, food quality and most sciences. Anyone who makes a decision based on color from a mobile device would benefit from the finding and conclusions of this study.

This study’s problem stems from the relationship of the mobile display’s technology and how this technology accurately renders color. The dependent variable is control image. The causal or independent variable is the sample of current mobile devices and is responsible for the change in problem variable. The control image is a function of the mobile device and the differences will be examined. If there is a change in causal variable (as a change in device), then there is an expected change in the problem variable.

 

Four-Color Booklet

This booklet was created as a group project by myself and three other students in DIGM 4373: Graphic Production Process Control III the University of Houston.

The booklet contains bleeds which extends the color off the edge of the page and is trimmed off. The design was created in Adobe InDesign.

An imposition was created using Kodak Preps. The  polyester press plates were created on the Mitsubishi SDP Eco 1630 Digital Image Setter.

The Image Transfer Lab runs a Ryobi 3302 HA 2 color offset lithographic printing press. To create a full color document, it requires two runs through the press. Cyan and black were printed on the first run. At the next run date, careful alignment and registration was made to ensure that yellow and magenta fit into it’s place and that the other color densities were met.

The signature sheets were printed with the final output pages in the proper position so that when folded the pages are in order. Two right angle folds were efficiently done with the Mathias Baurle folder; which is a buckle folder. The booklet is then saddle stitched using the Bindery-Mate stitcher. This makes the document lie flat and it opens completely. The booklet was trimmed into fished output using the Challenge 265 paper-cutter.

Fall Publication

 
The Fall 2013 edition of Visual Communications Journal will include my research; which is entitled
Is Color Displayed Accurately on Current Mobile Device Displays? The journal is published by the International Graphic Arts Education Association (IGAEA) and will be available in November.
